Stony Brook School

Stony Brook School is dedicated to offering a quality education in a caring environment to the fourth and fifth grade students in the District. Every effort is made to provide students with the skills, knowledge and attitudes that will foster a continuing desire for self-improvement in all areas of their lives. The core curriculum subjects include language arts, mathematics, science and social studies.

Stony Brook has a six-day rotation schedule, which ensures that each student will receive instruction consistently throughout the school year. Students receive daily instruction in math, language arts, science, and social studies. Each week during a six-day rotation, each student receives a period of instruction in physical education, one period of instruction in computers, music, art and library. All students receive instruction in health education. The D.A.R.E. program is part of the fifth grade health program.

Students are taught most subjects in heterogeneous classes in order to provide everyone with an equal opportunity to learn. Special instruction is provided for those students who need additional help in math and language arts. Our enrichment teacher provides enrichment to all students in various areas. Gifted and talented students receive instruction in their language arts and math classes. Special needs students are included in regular classes and provided additional assistance from special education teachers. Small group instruction is provided for students in need of instructional support in reading and math. Special needs students can also receive instruction in the resource room. Speech and English as a Second Language instruction is provided for students.

All students receive instruction in general music throughout the year. Students in fifth grade may also choose to receive instruction in instrumental music. Approximately eighty percent of the students choose to learn to play a band instrument. Band is offered as a pullout program, which rotates to a different period each six-day rotation. In this way, a student misses a class only one or two times during a trimester. The enthusiasm of the students and the dedication of the teachers has resulted in the band being one of the largest and best in the area for this level.

Every effort is made to provide for an educational program that meets the needs of the students. Every classroom is provided with at least three computers that are networked to provide access to the library, online resources, and the Internet. Classrooms are also provided with wall monitors that can show videos for instruction. These monitors can be connected to the computer to allow computer-assisted instruction. In their computer class, students receive instruction in word processing, databases, spreadsheets, and Powerpoint using Microsoft Office. The media center provides instruction in how to do research using printed materials, as well as online information.

Specialized classrooms are available for instruction in music, art, computers and technology education. Each of these rooms is well-equipped with the necessary materials to provide opportunities for students to experience the arts as well as gain exposure to work related skills.

The guidance program provides students with the opportunity to develop an understanding of themselves as well as coping skills. The school counselor meets with students both individually and in groups in order to address their special needs.

The Stony Brook Staff is consistently exploring new ways for improving the educational program to better meet the needs of our students. Teachers are available to meet with parents to discuss concerns that affect their child in order to assist the student in his/her education. The state core curricular standards are regularly reviewed to ensure that the students are meeting the expectations of the state. Stony Brook students continue to perform well on national tests.
