Reading Without Walls Challenge and Hallway Displays
Students and staff at Stony Brook School have been participating in the Reading Without Walls challenge since February. This reading initiative was the platform of the 2016-17 National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature, author Gene Yang. The challenge includes three components:
- read a book about someone who doesn’t look or live like you
- read a book about a topic you don’t know much about
- read a book in a format you don’t usually read.
So far many students have completed the challenge and earned a certificate. Individual classes have also participated in the challenge.
Read Across America Week: Celebrating a Nation of Diverse Readers
February 26 - March 2 was Read Across America week and the Reading Without Walls challenge was incorporated into our celebrations. Classes chose one of the books they read and created engaging, thoughtful, and colorful displays outside their rooms for the whole school to see. Looking at the displays it’s clear to see that these classes achieved a goal of the challenge--students were able to put themselves in someone else’s shoes and consider the world beyond their own walls.
Stony Brook also continued our tradition of celebrating Read Across America week with many Dr. Seuss themed activities, including dress up days, daily trivia contests, and special reading times.
