Huskies Hustle for Houston

Stony Brook Huskies Hustle for Houston!
Stony Brook Walk-a-ThonDear Stony Brook Families,

As we all know, Hurricane Harvey left much flooding and devastation to Texas. We know that many schools have been destroyed or flooded, and as a result, many students and teachers will be working in makeshift classrooms once it is safe to return to school. As teachers, we know the excitement and love that we pour into creating a welcoming and safe environment for our students. We also know that the students look forward to a structured, fun-loving environment where they can grow both academically and socially.

Stony Brook School has decided that it is important to do our part, so we have adopted a Houston school to help! Our adopted school, Northline Elementary School, is home to about 600 students in North Houston. The areas and homes surrounding the school have flooded significantly, some families losing everything. The students were just able to start their school year on September 11th.

As a school, we have decided to hold a Walk-a-Thon to raise funds to help Northline Elementary School. The Walk-a-Thon will be held on Friday, October 6th, rain date Friday, October 13th. The Walk-a-Thon will take place during the school day. We will be speaking with students to ask their family and friends to pledge donations for the walk. We will be partnering with The Rotary Club of Branchburg to provide the funds to Northline Elementary School. Pledge donations can be made in two ways, cash or check (made out to Rachael Johnston and in the memo write “Huskies Hustle for Houston”) sent into school in an envelope labeled “Huskies Hustle for Houston” and given to your child’s homeroom teacher. We ask that all pledges are in by Tuesday, October 3rd.

Through this service learning experience, our Stony Brook students will learn about the school’s location, discuss Hurricane Harvey, and write encouraging words to the students to send with our fundraising money. We will act out our pillars of character through these activities.

On the day of the Walk-a-Thon, we will be asking students to wear Northline Elementary School’s colors of blue and orange. Then as a school, we will present the fundraising total to Northline Elementary School via Skype soon after our Walk-a-Thon.

Thank you so much for your help and support in our efforts to help our adopted school in Texas! We know you echo in our sentiments that all children deserve a wonderful place to learn and grow.

Best wishes,

The Stony Brook Family
